Lord

The heart of the Christian community is our Triune Lord: Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Geography, history, and numbers are not the heart, but probably I will type mostly on these topics. As the internet already provides many encouraging spiritual guides and discouraging contentious forums, I intend to offer neither.

St. Kilian, Farmingdale

Originally built in 1897, St. Killian church was greatly enlarged a century later.  It stands on the south side of Conklin Street (NY 24), Farmingdale, a block east of Main Street.  The mailing address of the rectory, which is on the north side of Conklin Street, is 485 Conklin Street, Farmingdale, NY 11735, telephone 516-249-0127.  The informative parish website is linked here.

Any photo may be enlarged by clicking on it.

The principal window of the east transept honors the martyrs Kolonat, Kilian, and Totnan, killed at Würzburg, Germany, about the year 688.  For that account, please see the Our Patron link on the parish website, left column.  The rosary beads worn by Kolonat and Totnan may be anachronistic, about five centuries too soon.

On the north side of Conklin Street stands St. Benedict's chapel with the parish office and the rectory.  I am rather certain that the chapel was constructed and used long before the church was enlarged and renovated.

On Cherry Street, adjacent to the church,  is an auditorium and school.

Five parishes sponsored this regional school, but the Bishop of Rockville Centre has ordered it to be closed in June, 2012.

St. Patrick, Glen Cove

St Patrick's church, Glen Cove NY

This 2006 photo from my Flickr pages shows (to the left) All Saints Regional Catholic School and (to the right) St. Patrick's church, with the afternoon sun. Glen Street is in the foreground, and the LIRR Glen Street station is off to the right (south). A pedestrian can reach the parish office, church, and school by climbing from this side. Drivers can find a parking lot up Pearsall Avenue along the left side of the school. Another entrance to all the buildings is behind the school.  The mailing address of the parish office is 235 Glen Street, Glen Cove, NewYork 11542, telephone 516-676-0276. What was an excellent parish website may be off-line temporarily.

Any photo may be enlarged by clicking on it.

Above are the church and school as seen from the Pearsall Avenue entrance.

According to diocesan archives, Irish, fleeing the famine, arrived in Glen Cove to work in a starch factory.  For several years, priests from Jamaica visited Glen Cove for their care.  In 1856, Bishop John Loughlin of Brooklyn established St. Patrick's parish.  The present church has the above cornerstone.

This is the main door of All Saints Regional Catholic School.  Please see the school's website for information.  The postal address is 12 Pearsall Avenue, Glen Cove NY 11542, telephone 516-676-0762. Five parishes sponsor the school: St. Mary (Roslyn), St. Patrick, St. Rocco, St. Boniface Martyr, and St. Hyacinth. A promotional video from January, 2012, is linked here.
----
A half-mile south of St. Patrick's church is the parish of St. Rocco, established in 1937. In 2012, the same priest is pastor of both parishes.  Weekdays, Mass at St. Rocco is at 7:30 a.m., at St. Patrick at 9 a.m. (as of May, 2012).

St. Rocco, Glen Cove

The church of St. Rocco stands on the south side of Third Street, Glen Cove, east of Cedar Swamp Road.  The address of the parish office is 18 Third Street, Glen Cove, New York 11542, telephone 718-676-2482.  The parish website, linked here, provides schedules, history, photos, and much more of interest.

The image of Jesus as a Good Shepherd dates from the early Roman church, centuries before there were images of the crucified Jesus.

St. Rocco is shown in this bas-relief.  Please note that he was born in France.

Five Catholic parishes sponsor All Saints Regional Catholic School, about a half-mile north of St. Rocco's church.

St. Joseph, Garden City

St. Joseph church, Garden City, is located on the southwest corner of Franklin Avenue and Fifth Street.  The parish office is at 130 Fifth Street, Garden City, NY 11530, telephone 516-747-3535.  The parish website is linked here.

The parish was established in 1905.  This cornerstone of this church carries the date 1953.  To the left and right of the altar are paintings of Joseph at Nazareth.

Over the main entrance is this bas-relief, presumably showing Joseph as patron of the universal church.  The motto reads, "Go to Joseph."

The title reads, "Head of the nurturing family."

The title reads, "Get up and take the boy," presumably in flight to Egypt.

St. Therese of Lisieux stands in the church garden.

The address of St. Joseph parish school is 450 Franklin Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530, telephone 516-747-2730.  The school website is linked here.  Franklin Avenue is to the east (left).  To the west is a newer classroom building, connected to this building by a second-floor bridge.

Corpus Christi, Mineola

Above is the entrance to Corpus Christi church on Garfield Avenue, Mineola.

Corpus Christi parish stands on the southwest corner of Willis and Garfield Avenues in Mineola.  The altar is at this Willis Avenue end of the church, and the door shown in the above photo is not an entrance.  Please enter from Garfield Avenue.  The mailing address is 155 Garfield Avenue, Mineola, NY 11501, telephone 516-746-1223.  The parish website is linked here.

The above two photos were taken on May 13, 2012, as people assembled for the 8:30 a.m. Mass in Portuguese.  It is the feast of Our Lady of Fatima.  Any photo may be enlarged by clicking on it.

On Searing Avenue are two buildings that once formed the parish elementary school.  They are joined by a bridge at the second floor.  Religious education and a youth center use these buildings now.  This view looks west towards Willis Avenue and the church.

St. Aidan, Williston Park

The church of St. Aidan and its buildings line both sides of Willis Avenue in Williston Park.  Though each building carries a separate number (helpful to emergency services), the parish mailing address is 505 Willis Avenue, Williston Park, New York 11596.  The phone number is 516-746-6585, with various extensions for the offices, among them: Rectory ext. 9101, west school ext. 9202, east school ext. 9302.  The parish website is linked here.

Above, the first photo shows the church on the west side of Willis Avenue, one block north of Hillside Avenue (NY 25B).

Holy Name of Mary, Valley Stream

Holy Name of Mary Church is located at 55 East Jamaica Avenue, Valley Stream, NY 11580, telephone 516-825-1450.  Its informative website is linked here.

The top photo is taken from the intersection of East Jamaica Avenue and South Grove Street, which happens to be a block east of Valley Stream's business district on Rockaway Avenue.  The church has two naves, joined at the altar.  The second photo shows the principal nave.  Doors to East Jamaica Avenue are behind the photographer.  To the left of the altar is another nave, with doors to South Grove Street.

Across from the church is the parish elementary school at 90 South Grove Street, Valley Stream, NY 11580, telephone 516-825-4009.  The school's website is linked here. An excellent, upbeat news article in the Long Island Herald on 4.27.2012 states that the K-8 enrollment is 274.

Sister Elizabeth Marie was principal of the school from 1997 to 2005.
