CCD Religious Ed enrollments OCD 2019

The Official Catholic Directory for 2019 lists sixty-two parishes in Nassau County and their enrollment statistics for religious ed or Confraternity of  Christian Doctrine programs. Please note that these students are in addition to the students who receive religious instruction in parish schools. Demographics, the nature and history of the parish are all reflected in these numbers, especially the places with lower enrollments. For example, Point Lookout is a community of retirees or seasonal second homes. St. Hedwig is a national parish. In several instances from long ago, a connected pastor would not suffer his parish to be dismembered, or would tolerate only a small portion to be formed as a separate parish. In several instances, people from non-Catholic parts of the world are moving into the neighborhood, as in Great Neck or Elmont. There is often a story behind extraordinary religious ed numbers.

The 2019 edition of the Official Catholic Directory includes enrollment figures for 24 parishes (or regional schools) of Nassau County.  Some numbers are unreliable because the school strangely reported the exact same enrollment the previous year. I presume that the OCD numbers are from 2018. Also, there is no indication whether each school's enrollment includes pre-Kindergarten.

Comparing the above marriage numbers for the Diocese of Rockville Centre with numbers for the Diocese of Brooklyn:
Catholic marriages: 1,849.
Interfaith marriages: 357.
Total marriages: 2,206.
Total Catholic population in the diocese of Brooklyn: 1,506,000.
Both dioceses have two counties.  The diocese of Brooklyn has 50,000 more Catholics and 1,000 fewer weddings. Does DRVC have more people of marriageable age?

Nassau numbers from 2015 Directory

The 2015 Official Catholic Directory, recently available, includes statistics probably collected in 2014 or earlier.  My computations could be wrong, but it would seem that the 27 Catholic elementary schools in Nassau County had a total enrollment about 9,797, plus whatever the enrollment at Notre Dame, New Hyde Park, is.  Whether some schools included pre-kindergarten students in the count is unclear.    St. Agnes, Rockville Centre, reported the highest enrollment, 753 students.  St. William the Abbot, Seaford, reported 569, but that was the same number reported last year.  St. Anne 530, St. Aidan 518.

The median group of the 27 Nassau County Catholic schools would seem to be Our Lady of Victory, Floral Park, 365, St. Elisabeth Ann Seton, Bellmore,  356, and St. Joseph, Garden City, 356.  With lower enrollments are Our Lady of Lourdes, Malverne, 263, and All Saints Regional, Glen Cove, 195.

The site elementaryschools.org lists grade-by-grade enrollment without giving a date of the statistics.  However, an analysis of that site shows how Pre-Kindergarten enrollment at some parishes can skew the total.

The approximately 66 parishes in Nassau County have religious education programs which instructed about 43,208 youngsters, plus whatever the enrollments at Notre Dame and St. Anthony (Oceanside) are.  The highest enrollments seems to have been at St. Rose of Lima, 2,695 students, Maria Regina 1,800, and St. Frances de Chantal 1,633. The median group would seem to hover around the 570's, St. Ignatius Martyr, Long Beach, Our Lady of Mercy, Hicksville, and St. Boniface Martyr, Sea Cliff.

Diocesan priests: 207 active in the diocese, 11 outside the diocese. Number retired, sick, or absent: 92.

Students in Catholic elementary schools: 17,202.  Was 20,042 in 2011.

Catholic HS entrance exam Oct. 31, 2015.

Regarding entrance to a Catholic high school in Nassau or Suffolk County, New York, the dates are fast approaching.  Please see the website linked here for a list of deadlines and other information about taking the test.  The website includes applications for the exam with or without a request for exceptional treatment "with accommodation."

Newsday.com posted the names of high school graduates in Nassau and Suffolk Counties in June, 2015.  The numbers that follow represent my count of the names. I have interspersed some public high schools for the sake of comparison. There are seven Catholic high schools in Nassau county.

LIPA's January, 2011, population estimates were:
Nassau: 1,337,756.
Suffolk: 1,492,450
Total population of the diocese's two counties: 2,830,306.
The 2012 OCD  used the number 2,875,904 for the total population, close enough. However, the OCD 2013 and 2014 population numbers are about 460,000 too high!

The U.S. Census bureau estimated the 2013 population of Nassau County as 1,342,156 and Suffolk County as 1,499,738, for a total Diocese of Rockville Centre population (both counties) of 2,841894.  
I cannot find 2013 or 2014 estimates from LIPA or PSEG, the power companies.

Catholic elementary schools in Nassau County

About twenty-eight Catholic elementary schools teach approximately 10,360 students in Nassau County, according to the 2013 Official Catholic Directory. Most of these schools are parish-based.  Five are regional, that is, nearby parishes support a school together or are listed as sending their students to that school.  Each of the three "private" schools is unique.  The De La Salle School, Freeport, teaches only boys and only grades 5-8.  Holy Child Academy is an independent school with higher tuition.  The St. Martin de Porres school in Uniondale is somehow linked with neighboring parishes but controlled by the Marianist Province of Meribah.

As reported to the Directory, these elementary schools have the largest enrollment in Nassau County:  St. Agnes Cathedral, with 827 students; St. William the Abbot, 585; St. Aidan, 540; St. Anne, 540.  The approximate median enrollments are: Maria Regina, 400; Holy Family, 365; St. Joseph, 356. One parish school and one regional school reported enrollments under 230 when the OCD figures were collected.

CCD in Nassau County parishes

CCD is a tag often given to Religious Education programs in U. S. parishes.  Shortly after the Council of Trent ended in 1563, various Catholic priests, bishops and laity attempted to improve the education of youngsters in their faith.  In Italy, the movement coalesced under the name Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.  In the 1940's in New York City, we knew it as Released Time, when public school students would travel to the Catholic school for an hour of religious instruction.  In other places, it went under the colloquialism CCD, sometimes called Religious Ed nowadays. On Long Island, the Religious Ed or CCD program is generally for youngsters attending public school.

From the 2013 Official Catholic Directory, I calculate the number of CCD students in Nassau County as approximately 45,600 in about 68 parishes.  The largest enrollments claimed are at St. Rose of Lima (2,600), St. Frances de Chantal (2,228), and Maria Regina (2,010).  The median enrollments are around St. Thomas the Apostle (525), Holy Family (500), and Our Lady of Hope (493).  Seven parishes report fewer than 130 students.  In Nassau County, the 28 Catholic elementary schools enroll about 10,400 students.

Hundreds of volunteer teachers staff the program, and many of these have given long years to this service. The totality of parishes providing in-service education of these teachers is hefty, but I have been unable to find on the diocesan Faith Formation website no more than a few courses.  Once upon a time, a complete list was regularly printed in the now-defunct weekly Long Island Catholic.

The 2012 Official Catholic Directory, recently available, includes statistics probably collected in 2011 or earlier.  My computations could be wrong, but it would seem that the 26 Catholic elementary schools in Nassau County had a total enrollment about 10,038.  Whether some schools included pre-kindergarten students in the count is unclear.  Also, some schools reported the same exact enrollment for three years running, an unlikely event.  St. Agnes, Rockville Centre, reported the highest enrollment, 827 students.

The seven Catholic high schools in Nassau County reported a total enrollment of about 8,218 students.  The highest number reported is 2,553 at Kellenberg, but that may include grades 7 and 8, the Latin School.

The population of The Bronx is a little higher than that of Nassau County, 1,392,002 vs 1,344,436 people in the 2010 census.  Bronx Catholic elementary schools enrolled 17,380 youngsters.  Nassau Catholic schools taught about 10,038.  Fifty-one Bronx parishes now have elementary schools.  Twenty-six Nassau parishes have elementary schools.  In CCD or religious education enrollment, the situation is the reverse.  Bronx parishes reported about 11,271 students in religious ed.  Nassau religious education enrollment figures are much greater, about 46,620.
