Registration has begun for the Test for Acceptance to Catholic High Schools

This notice addresses the eighth grade students who hope to begin attendance at a Catholic High School in September, 2021. The time for registration has begun. For more information, please see this handbook, which might be worth printing.

This entrance exam now includes Catholic High Schools on Long Island, twelve counties in total:

Brooklyn,  Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, and Orange. There are no Catholic high schools in Sullivan or Ulster counties. I know of one Catholic High School that requires a separate exam, namely all-boys Regis High School in Manhattan. Because the school listings are on landscape pages, I suggest that you print the lists of the counties that interest you.

The on-line registration form is linked HERE, the fee $60. It would appear that the registration due date is October 3rd.

The CHSEE website this year has changed the round-number enrollment for Chaminade from 1,700 (listed for several past years) to 1,650.
However, Holy Trinity, Hicksville, uses a suspect round-number of 1,000 for enrollment. There is no harm publicizing the exact enrollment as of a specific date. Enrollment per grade level would also be informative.
Kellenberg Memorial in Uniondale reports an enrollment of 2,150, but does not state whether that figure includes grades 6 to 12 or only the high school.
Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset, reports 114 graduates in June, 2018, and an enrollment of 415 young women, both credible numbers.
Sacred Heart Academy, Hempstead, reports an enrollment of 890 young women.
St. Dominic's College Prep HS, Oyster Bay, reports an enrollment of 410.
St. Mary's HS, Manhasset, gives a round-number enrollment of 600.

I wonder about the ratio between the number of test-takers and seats available in the nine high schools, especially since we do not know how many eighth-graders paid for the test in 2017.

St. Mary High School, Manhasset, 589 students, 41 teachers.
Sacred Heart Academy, Hempstead, 825 girls (same as 2015), 93 teachers.
Holy Trinity Diocesan High School, Hicksville, 1,022 students, 62 teachers.
Chaminade High School, Mineola, 1,700 boys (same as 2015), 74 teachers.
St. John the Baptist High School, West Islip, 1,700 students, 113 teachers.

Newsday.com posted the names of high school graduates in Nassau and Suffolk Counties in June, 2015.  The numbers that follow represent my count of the names. I have interspersed some public high schools for the sake of comparison. There are seven Catholic high schools in Nassau county.

Nassau Numbers from 2011

The 2012 Official Catholic Directory, recently available, includes statistics probably collected in 2011 or earlier.  My computations could be wrong, but it would seem that the 26 Catholic elementary schools in Nassau County had a total enrollment about 10,038.  Whether some schools included pre-kindergarten students in the count is unclear.  Also, some schools reported the same exact enrollment for three years running, an unlikely event.  St. Agnes, Rockville Centre, reported the highest enrollment, 827 students.

The approximately 66 parishes in the county have religious education programs which instructed about 46,620 youngsters.  The highest enrollment seems to have been at St. Rose of Lima: 2,890 students.

The seven Catholic high schools in Nassau County reported a total enrollment of about 8,218 students.  The highest number reported is 2,553 at Kellenberg, but that may include grades 7 and 8, the Latin School.

The population of The Bronx is a little higher than that of Nassau County, 1,392,002 vs 1,344,436 people in the 2010 census.  Bronx Catholic elementary schools enrolled 17,380 youngsters.  Nassau Catholic schools taught about 10,038.  Fifty-one Bronx parishes now have elementary schools.  Twenty-six Nassau parishes have elementary schools.  In CCD or religious education enrollment, the situation is the reverse.  Bronx parishes reported about 11,271 students in religious ed.  Nassau religious education enrollment figures are much greater, about 46,620.

St. Mary, Manhasset

The church of St. Mary, Manhasset, is located at 1300 Northern Blvd, Manhasset, NY 11030, telephone 516-627-0385.  Its website is linked here.  The parish property is quite extensive, all on the south side of Northern Boulevard, NY 25A,  as one ascends eastbound from Manhassset Valley Park and Community Drive.  The above two views are taken from the sidewalk of Northern Boulevard near Clapham Avenue.  Parking is behind the church.

The parish history is a bit complicated because the parish was at times an established parish, at times a mission of another parish.  In the 1850's, an older wooden church located at St. Michael's, Flushing, was transported to Plandome Road to provide a mission church for St. Mary's, which received its first resident pastor in 1863.  However, in 1871, it became a mission of St. Mary's, Roslyn and in 1897 a mission of St. Peter of Alcantara, Port Washington. In 1912, it received its own pastor, who modeled the present church on the San Luis Rey mission in California.

All the parish buildings are on the south side of Northern Blvd. in Manhasset.  While the rectory address is 1300, the elementary school is at 1340 Northern Blvd., telephone 516-627-0184.  The high school is on the west side of the church, at 51 Clapham Avenue, Manhasset NY 11030, telephone 516-627-2711.

St. Mary's elementary school, resembling a church at first glance, stands prominently at the intersection of Plandome Road and Northern Boulevard.  Its address is 1340 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, NY 11030, telephone 516-627-0184.  The elementary school website is linked here.  

St. Mary's High School uses the address of the above building at 51 Clapham Avenue, Manhasset NY 11540, telephone 516-627-2711.  The high school website is linked here.

However, the high school also uses this newer building adjacent to Brinkerhoff Lane and south of the elementary school.

St. Dominic, Oyster Bay

The mailing address of St. Dominic's parish is 93 Anstice Street, Oyster Bay, NY 11771, telephone 516-922-4488.  Above is the parish office on the southeast corner of Anstice Street and Weeks Avenue.  The parish website is linked here.

On the west side of Anstice Street are the chapel (formerly the church) and the newer church.  Weekday Mass is in the chapel at 7:30 a.m.  Sundays,  four Masses are offered in the church, three in the chapel.  

Saint Dominic Elementary School adjoins the church on the north side of Weeks Avenue.  Any photo may be enlarged by clicking on it.  On 5.28.2013, Newsday reported that the elementary school enrollment is 237.

Two classroom buildings of St. Dominic High School face each other across quiet Anstice Avenue.  The gymnasium can be seen to the left (north).
