Lord

The heart of the Christian community is our Triune Lord: Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Geography, history, and numbers are not the heart, but probably I will type mostly on these topics. As the internet already provides many encouraging spiritual guides and discouraging contentious forums, I intend to offer neither.

Five new pastors in Nassau County

The Long Island Catholic has listed five new pastors of parishes in Nassau County (link HERE). These appointments by Bishop Murphy are effective June 29, 2016.  The parishes with new pastors are Corpus Christi (Mineola), Cure of Ars (Merrick), St. Martha (Uniondale), and St. Gertrude (Bayville). In what seems to be a change of titles, one priest will serve three parishes: pastor of St. Joseph (Hewlett) and Our Lady of Good Counsel (Inwood), and administrator of St. Joachim (Cedarhurst).
---
The list continues with the appointment of Associate Pastors at St. James (Seaford), St. Rose (Massapequa), St. Dominic (Oyster Bay), St. Ignatius Loyola (Hicksville), St. Barnabas (Bellmore), Notre Dame (New Hyde Park), Holy Family (Hicksville), and Sacred Heart (North Merrick).

Notre Dame, New Hyde Park

In northern New Hyde Park, a block north of the busy intersection of New Hyde Park Road and Hillside Avenue (NY 25B) are the church, school, and other buildings of Notre Dame parish.  The top photograph looks south on New Hyde Park Road.

The rectory and school are on the east side of the property, residential and quiet Mayfair Road.  The parish office is at 45 Mayfair Road, New Hyde Park, NY 11040, telephone 516-352-7203.  The parish website is linked here.

Any photo may be enlarged by clicking on it.  Notre Dame School is at 25 Mayfair Road, telephone 516-354-5618.  The school's website is linked here

The school's website gives the N-8 enrollment as 388 in January, 2012, but does not distinguish between the early childhood programs and the K-8 enrollment.

Holy Spirit, New Hyde Park

Holy Spirit Church is located on the south side of Jericho Turnpike (NY 25) in New Hyde Park.  The rectory address is 11 South Sixth Street, New Hyde Park NY 11040, telephone 516-354-0359.
----
Bishop Charles McDonnell of Brooklyn established this parish in 1897 as Holy Ghost parish.  Five years later, he established the parish of St. Hedwig, a half-mile west.

A note in the parish bulletin states that the 5 p.m. Sunday Mass is not offered during the summer.

Looking north on South Sixth Street, one can view Precious Spirit Child Care Center in the former elementary school.  Also visible are the tall windows of the church with classrooms above it.  At the far end is Jericho Turnpike.  The rectory is to the right of the car.

North Hempstead deanery

The Diocese of Rockville Centre has seven deaneries in Nassau County.  The North Hempstead Deanery includes the following parishes, in order of foundation:
1863 -- St. Mary, Manhassset
1876 -- St. Aloysius, Great Neck.
1893 -- Holy Spirit, New Hyde Park.
1901 -- St. Peter of Alcantara, Port Washington
1901 -- Corpus Christi, Mineola.
1925 -- St. Aidan, Williston Park
1941 -- Notre Dame, New Hyde Park.
1948 -- Our Lady of Fatima, Manorhaven.
The North Hempstead deanery is not coterminous with the Town of North Hempstead.
Four of the eight parishes support a parish elementary school: St. Aidan (at about 600 students, maybe the sixth largest in the diocese), St. Mary, St. Peter of Alcantara, and Notre Dame.  St. Mary's parish, Manhasset, hosts a parish high school.
